Killeen observes that Wilde's two volumes of fairy tales, The Happy Prince and Other Tales (1888) and A House of Pomegranates (1891), have been marginal to his canon in part because they do not fit into the usual view of Wilde as "a subversive writer" and in part "because children's literature. ![]() On the faculty at Trinity College, Dublin, Killeen provides a late nineteenth century Irish Catholic context for Oscar Wilde's fairy tales as a way to better understand them. ![]()

5/23/2023 0 Comments The It Girl by Ruth Ware![]() ![]() Ware divides the novel into alternating “before” and “after” chapters, with the narrative of Hannah’s college experience unfolding parallel to the events of her life nearly a decade later, when she’s married to Will and pregnant with their first child. When Hannah finds April dead one night just after she’s seen Neville coming down the stairs from their rooms, it’s her testimony that puts him in jail. It’s a good life except for the increasingly creepy interactions she has with John Neville, one of the porters. Sharing a picturesque set of rooms with the flamboyant and beautiful April Clarke-Cliveden, she divides her time between rigorous studying and energetic socializing with Emily Lippmana, Ryan Coates, Hugh Bland, and Will de Chastaigne, with whom she shares an attraction even though he's April’s boyfriend. Hannah Jones arrives at Oxford hardly believing that she’s been accepted into this haven of learning and wealth. ![]() Ten years after having discovered her Oxford roommate’s dead body in front of the fireplace in their room, a young woman struggles with the realization that she may have helped send the wrong man to prison. ![]() 5/23/2023 0 Comments Becoming alpha by aileen erin![]() ![]() ![]() Then again, it isn’t easy for a girl with visions to ignore what she sees. Frank Baum![]() ![]() ![]() I also really like Tiktok, but found him hard to perform. Also like Wizard, Baum does a good job of introducing a set of weird characters who make contributions to the story: Billina the Yellow Hen is an utter delight, and surely one of the best Oz characters Baum ever devised, and I had great fun reading her dialogue aloud in a chicken voice. It must have captured my son's attention, because soon he was sitting in a cardboard box on the floor, claiming to be floating in the ocean himself. Like Wonderful Wizard, Ozma of Oz has a great, arresting opening that immediately plunges the reader (or listener) into adventure: Dorothy is on a ship at sea, a wave knocks her overboard, and soon she is adrift, clinging onto a chicken coop. I read this aloud to my toddler, and I think reading something aloud makes you aware of the pacing and the energy of the text. ![]() I feel like Baum got his mojo back here after the stumble that was The Marvelous Land of Oz. ![]() ![]() ![]() Lady Thra of Laniat flees deep into the forest after the last of her liegemen is killed. Some of her works haven't aged well, but then you'll come across something like this and remember just why she was so very popular among all age groups. Despite being marketed to children, her stories didn't pull any punches in regard to violence, depression, and even suicide. I much preferred her science fiction stories to those with a more fantasy bent at that time. Norton was a favorite of mine in middle school once I actually started reading science fiction.
